Can Home Automation Help The Latchkey Kid Situation?

It is a sad reality that in today’s society…it takes more than one income to put food on the table for the average family.
Where does that leave our little ones?
Its frustrating to say this, but it’s exactly as the movie put it… “Home Alone”.
When I was a boy, it was pretty common for a family to get by on just one paycheck.
Have things changed any?
You bet.
Between the high cost of living, spiraling housing costs, the outsourcing of jobs oversees & the uncontrollable desire to “keep up with the Jones”, its no wonder that the number of unattended latchkey kids is growing leaps and bounds.
On top of that when you add the ever-growing number single parent homes into the mix and its no wonder that many of our kids are at home unsupervised between the the time school lets out and one of their parents gets home from the 9-5 grind.
While in the past a parent would call their youngsters at the house to see what was going on… Today, concerned parents equip their kids with a personal cell phones or pagers to keep tabs on their kids. But cell phones have limitations, don’t they? Its true a mobile phone will allow you to talk with your children—
But it doesn’t exactly tell you WHERE the children are. As a result, kids are often not at home when their parents call…and the temptation to lie about their whereabouts is always there.
Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way to tell the moment when your children arrived home from school…and when they decided to sneak out of the house without your knowledge.
Believe it or not…twenty first century home automation technology gives you this information while you are still sitting at your desk in the office.
Imagine your home automation system sending you an email notifying you the moment your children get home! But it gets even better then that…can you imagine being able to once the kids are home – to monitor your little ones when they open any door or window.
Lets take an example. Young Bobby gets home a t 3:30 every day after school. But today he gets home at 4:25 in the afternoon, because of stopping off to play video games at a friend’s house. Your new home automation latchkey attendant will alert Mom the second he gets home via an Internet email.
In the past Bobby could have easily fibbed to his mom…after all, how would they ever know what time he got home from school? But Bobby now knows he can’t lie because he knows that the home automation system is tied into monitoring every door of the house. Mom can now ask, “Where have you been & why are you 45 minutes late!”
The same goes for kids who are grounded. Perhaps their punishment includes not having friends over after school. An Internet email will notify the parents the second a door or window is opened with a youngster trying to sneak a friend in.
Who ever though of home automation as a baby sitter?
